Title: Summon Service agreements with Thomson Reuters and Publishing Technology (Ingenta)

Date: July 2009

Vendor: Serials Solutions

Press Release:

Thomson Reuters to Participate in the Summon Service

Serials Solutions' Web-scale discovery will feature Web of Science(R) citing references and more

July 9, 2009 (SEATTLE) - Thomson Reuters will participate in Serials Solutions' new Summon(TM) web-scale discovery service, allowing records from Web of Science(R) to be indexed by the service and enabling citation counts to appear in search results for subscribing customers. The Summon(TM) service is a pioneer in providing single search box access to the breadth of library collections - from books and videos to e-resources at the article level.

"This is a significant enhancement to the Summon service's ability to connect users to exceptional content," said John Law, Vice President, Serials Solutions. "'Times cited' is an important indicator of the credibility and authority of any given article...its display on the search page points students and faculty instantly to the most significant resources for scholarly research."

In addition to the "Times Cited" count, the Summon(TM) search results for customer libraries will include an option for the user to view the citing items and link directly to them in Web of Science.

"Citations put data into context, and the Web of Science--the world's largest citation database--helps researchers, students, and faculty discover new insights every day," said James Pringle, vice president of product development at Thomson Reuters. "We're delighted to support the work of Serials Solutions in this innovative approach that makes this resource even more easily discoverable to the campus communities that subscribe to it."

Available commercially in July, the Summon(TM) web-scale

discovery service overcomes what research shows is a fundamental barrier between libraries and users: the lack of a simple, obvious starting point for research. Users enter a search term in a library-branded search box and the Summon(TM) service instantly conducts a single search against pre-harvested content, enabling true relevancy-ranked results in one integrated list. The service provides simplicity for users and exposes the breadth of the library's content, allowing more resources to be discovered.

Publishers and other contributors have embraced the Summon(TM) service for its ability to increase exposure of their data. In fact, the number of content providers has grown exponentially since the service's initial announcement in January. In addition to key content partners ProQuest and Gale - aggregators representing 4,700 publishers -- the Summon(TM) service participants include LexisNexis, Springer, Taylor& Francis, SAGE, IEEE, Emerald, Scitation publishers, the hundreds of scholarly publishers hosted by IngentaConnect and more. The number of participating publishers now tops 6,000.

The Summon(TM) service was developed in close cooperation with library beta sites -- partners in the service's mission to bring the researcher back to the library and provide a channel for greater return on the library's content investment. Beta sites include Dartmouth College, Oklahoma State University, University of Sydney, Claremont Colleges Library, University of Calgary, Western Michigan University, and University of Liverpool.
